An awesome idea: An LoA MySpace

Yep, I have a MySpace page. I've found it to be a complete waste of time and energy, so as you can see, I haven't done much with it. However, the social idea of it is very appealing. In fact, I really like MyBlogLog, since it's easy to check out the different communities that I'm interested, and link up with people/blogs I like to read. However, one thing that they both suffer from is SPAM and tons of negative energy.

Now, Aaron Potts at Today is the Day is putting together a (hopefully) spam-free, positive space:

As huge and far-reaching as the Internet is, the sheer size of the Internet makes it difficult to find people who are looking for networking opportunities in the specific area that you are also looking.

Add to that the fact that it is human nature to always ask "What's in it for me?" and it becomes even more difficult to find people who are willing to go out of their way to help you achieve your goals.

Personal Development Partners is going to change all of that by providing a simple, yet powerful interface that will allow you to find and network only with people who are willing to work together in partnerships and/or "mastermind" groups so that everyone gets what they want out of that relationship.
That sounds like an amazing idea. He lists a few features that will be implemented, mostly your standard social-website fare like personal profiles, buddy lists, and groups... and he asks for any advice or ideas.

The things I'd like to see:
  • A clean, simple, yet functional design.
  • 97% Spam-free. Not just a place for people to link to their own blogs.
  • The fewest possible clicks to get from one feature to another.
  • A widget feature similar to MyBlogLogs (I LOVE seeing who's been here)

One last point, I like the name Personal Development Partners in general, and it says what it is -- but when getting into Web 2.0 territory, you almost need to have a touch of hipness. MySpace and YouTube and MyBlogLog are very simple, easy-to-remember and "cool" names. Do I have any ideas? Absolutely not. :)
It's just a thought.

[update] The "tons of negative energy" is mostly refering to MySpace. There are actually negative elements in nearly every web community I've come across, but I just try to focus on the positive elements. With MyBlogLog, I find it easy to ignore the negative, and continue to find uplifting blogs and people through its service.

Yowza! Negative energy? Were working on the spam stuff but I don't even know the symptoms of negative energy. What can we do to make things more positive?

Much obliged for the link love as well as for your comments on the idea! I think we've got you covered on each of those bases:

1) Clean, simple, functional design - Yes! In fact, keeping it simple was one of the first things that went on the "must have" list.
2) 97% Spam Free - That is the plan! In fact, we'll shoot for an even higher percentage.
3) Fewest possible clicks - Absolutely. Again, the interface itself is going to be very easy to navigate and non-cluttered.
4) Recent readers widget - Yes, already in the design.

p.s. - I see Eric is here from MyBlogLog and I want to send a shout out. Eric - MBL is one of the coolest blog additions ever. There will always be people who try to take advantage of the system, but you guys do a good job of keeping it in check.

@Eric: I was mostly refering to MySpace as far as negative energy, namely the quasi-pornographic profiles/spammers and all the "drama". Though, the "drama" is user-created, so it's not MySpace's fault.

With MBL, the "negativity" I feel comes from things like people putting an attractive woman in their avatar, just so people click on their profile. I would never expect MBL to police something like that... as it's just my personal opinion, and I value freedom of expression. I instead just choose to ignore that element. Otherwise, I absolutely LOVE MyBlogLog... and I'm on it many times throughout the day.

@Aaron: It sounds like you've got everything covered. I'm excited to see it!
